What is acne, what causes it?

Acne is also called pimple. It is a chronic skin disease involving excessive oily skin, blockage and inflammation of the pores. There is colonization of bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes, which lives on sebum.
 
Acne can occur on the face, and also the back and chest. It affects mainly adolescent, however, in many cases, it can persist into adulthood.
 
A person who has pimple often suffers from other skin problem such as oily skin, open pores, and scarring. 

What causes pigmentation?
 
Pigmentation is due to overproduction of pigment (melanin) by the pigment cells (melanocytes). The pigment is taken up by the skin cells, and deposited in the epidermis and dermis.
 
There is a genetic predisposition to facial pigmentation, such as melasma, freckles, or Hori’s nevus.
 
Main triggers for facial pigmentation include:

• Sun exposure
• Pregnancy
• Hormone treatments
• Low thyroid function
• Medication
